Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

Who may enroll? Sumter County Adult Education program is open to all adults who are 17 years old or older and are not currently enrolled in high school.

Where is the program? Sumter County Adult Education’s main site is located at 905 North Main Street, Sumter, SC.

What is the cost? Fees for the 2023-2024 school year are $50 per semester for the GED Program and $75 persemester for the APEX Diploma Program. There may be a cost to take the GED Pre-test and GED test.  Some students are eligible for test waivers.

What are the hours of the program? Morning classes are held Tuesday through Thursday from 8 – 11:30 a.m.; Afternoon classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday from 5:00 – 8:30 p.m in person, and Wednesday from 5:00-8:30 virtually. Tutoring is available Monday through Thursday from 12:30 to 4:00 p.m.

What do I need to bring to enroll in the program?  Students will need some form of identification (driver’s license, library card, employee badge, state ID, etc.) If a student has any past school records such as transcripts, report cards, or name/address of last school attended, this information is useful in enrolling, but not required.

What kind of diploma will I receive if I participate in the program? Students participating in the Diploma program receive a standard High School diploma.  This program requires students to earn a required number of credits to receive the diploma and a minimum number of credits must have been earned prior to acceptance. Students participating in the GED program receive a South Carolina High School Equivalency Diploma. Both diplomas are accepted at al SC two and four-year colleges and universities as mandated by the SC State Legislature.

What subjects will be studied?  Depending on which program the student enrolls in, the subjects will be basic skills in reading, writing, social studies, science, literature, and mathematics.

Are there graduation activities if I complete the program?  A special end of year graduation is also held for students and their families; this includes caps, gowns and lots of applause!

Is childcare available during class time?  Sumter County Adult Education does not provide childcare during class time.
